Description

Function and Technical Context

The stator is the static component of the ignition and electrical charging system in outboard engines, responsible for generating alternating current through interaction with the rotating magnetic flywheel. Integrated into the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) ignition system specific to OMC engines, it produces the energy necessary to power the ignition modules, coil and, in some cases, the battery charging system. A deteriorated stator causes intermittent or complete ignition failures, loss of spark in one or several cylinders and, ultimately, the inability to start or keep the engine running. OMC references 582847, 583117 and 583670 correspond to units that are interchangeable with each other, so this stator covers all of those applications.

When to Replace This Component?

The most common symptoms of a faulty stator are: engine that will not start or that stalls suddenly at a certain rpm, weak or absent spark verified with a spark tester, ignition failure in hot conditions (the internal winding opens with temperature), and resistance readings out of range when measuring with a multimeter on the charging and pulse windings. It is recommended to verify the stator at each seasonal service —especially if the vessel has been in service for several years— and replace it at any anomalous reading, since a failure mid-crossing can leave the vessel without propulsion. Changing the stator preventatively when the first symptoms are detected is always more economical than emergency assistance on the water.
