Function and technical context

The 35 mm axle collar is an axial fixing and positioning element that works directly on the boat's transmission shaft, preventing unwanted longitudinal displacement of the axle within its housing. This component is part of the transmission and axle line system, acting as a mechanical stop that maintains the correct position of the axle with respect to the stern tube bearing, the aft stern tube and the coupling with the reduction box or motor. If the collar shows wear, excessive play or fatigue failure, the shaft can suffer axial displacements that cause abnormal vibrations, premature wear of the horn, loss of tightness in the stuffing box and, in severe cases, damage to the seal or the aft horn that results in water entering the interior of the hull.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be checked or replaced are: unusual vibration transmitted to the hull during navigation, perceptible axial play when manually moving the shaft on the tailline, or visible wear on the bearing faces of the collar detected during beaching of the boat. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each docking or seasonal maintenance, especially if the boat has accumulated many hours of navigation or has suffered knocks on the propeller. Replacing it preventively when detecting any abnormal play prevents more serious damage to the stern horn or stuffing box, repairs that are considerably more expensive and sometimes require a second unplanned beaching.
