HEXAGONAL ROOT ANODE SHAFT 45
Description
Function and technical context
The hexagonal sacrificial anode for 45mm shaft acts as cathodic protection of the propulsion shaft, attracting electrolytic corrosion and sacrificing instead of the most valuable metal components of the boat. It works in the propulsion system, specifically in the shaft line, protecting it against galvanic corrosion produced by the potential difference between different metals submerged in sea or brackish water. Its hexagonal geometry guarantees a secure fit and optimal electrical contact with the shaft, ensuring that protection is continuous and uniform throughout the entire boating season. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, the stainless steel or bronze shaft is exposed to accelerated corrosion, which can result in pitting, loss of resistant section and even breakage during navigation.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the shaft anode must be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is visually observed that the anode has considerably reduced its volume, appears irregular or has completely consumed areas, it is time to act. It is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anodes at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat is taken out of the water for hull inspection. Acting preventively and replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to the shaft, horn or propeller due to galvanic corrosion.
