Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial plate anodes are the central element of cathodic protection in boats, acting as an electrochemical barrier that concentrates galvanic corrosion on itself before it affects the structural metal parts of the hull, propeller, shafts or submerged bronze and stainless steel accessories. This Vetus plate anode (reference TEN00220) is made of zinc alloy, an ideal material for vessels that sail or remain at anchor in salt and brackish water, where the electrochemical potential requires active and continuous protection. Its plate configuration facilitates direct installation on flat surfaces of the hull or submerged structures, guaranteeing efficient electrical contact and uniform distribution of protection over the exposed area. Without cathodic protection that is correctly sized and in good condition, the iron, steel and copper alloys present in the boat are exposed to accelerated corrosion by eddy currents and galvanic torques, which can result in perforations in the hull, seizure of shafts or premature deterioration of the propeller.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the plate anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed approximately half of its volume, it has reached the limit of its effective useful life and no longer offers sufficient protection. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, zinc anodes should be inspected at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, and replaced whenever they show more than 50% wear, regardless of the time elapsed, since the intensity of galvanic corrosion varies depending on the type of water, the density of electrical currents in the mooring and the materials of the boat. Replacing the Vetus TEN00220 anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical and effective preventive measure to avoid costly structural damage requiring hull repairs or replacement of propulsion components in the off-season.
