COMPLETE RADICE ANODE SHAFT 50
Description
Function and technical context
The 50mm shaft sacrificial anode acts as a cathodic protector of the propulsion system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the tailshaft, propeller and bronze or stainless steel components of the drive train. It works in the external propulsion system of the boat, in direct contact with salt or brackish water, where the potential differences between different metals generate currents that degrade the most noble parts. Being the element with the lowest electrochemical potential, it corrodes in a controlled manner, protecting the rest of the assembly. Without a good anode, the tail shaft and horn can suffer irreversible pitting that compromises the watertightness of the hull and the integrity of the propulsion system.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it appears clearly reduced, irregular or with completely consumed areas, it no longer provides effective protection. The shaft anodes should be inspected and replaced at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas of very saline water or with high electrolyte activity it may be necessary to check them every six months. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid shaft degradation and the costly repair or replacement work that comes with ignoring cathodic protection.
