Function and technical context

The ogive anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be mounted on the tip of the propeller or ogive of the transmission shaft, acting as a sacrificial mass that absorbs electrolytic corrosion before it affects the metal parts of the propulsion group. It works within the boat's galvanic protection system, along with the other anodes of the hull and transmission, forming a continuous barrier against corrosion in marine environments. Its function is critical because, without adequate cathodic protection in the nose area, the propeller hub, shaft, and stainless steel or bronze surfaces are exposed to corrosion accelerated by eddy currents and electrochemical potential differences between dissimilar metals submerged in salt or brackish water. A depleted or missing nose anode can lead to deep pitting in the shaft, deterioration of the bushing and damage to the propeller that requires the boat to be beached for costly repairs.

When to replace this part?

The ogive anodes should be inspected at least once per nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, show irregular erosion, cracks or have partially detached from the housing. In boats that navigate in salt waters with high conductivity or that remain in port for a long time, wear may be faster and require inspection mid-season. The preventive replacement of the nose anode at the beginning of each season, or at each grounding, is the practice recommended by naval mechanics to guarantee the protection of the propulsion group and avoid higher-cost repairs to the shaft and propeller.
