Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is a fundamental element in the cathodic protection system of shaft-powered vessels. Made of zinc or an alloy with high electrochemical reactivity, it acts as a sacrificial metal: it corrodes itself to preserve the drive shaft, propeller and other submerged metal elements of the hull against galvanic corrosion. This type of corrosion is especially aggressive in marine environments, where the presence of dissolved salts accelerates the degradation of metals such as stainless steel, bronze or aluminum. The anode with reference CMX-90 is sized for 90 mm diameter shafts, fixing directly on the propeller shaft and guaranteeing effective protection coverage throughout the submerged work area.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the shaft anode is exhausted is the appearance of pitting or rust marks on the drive shaft itself, the propeller or the bronze accessories of the transmission assembly. An anode consumed by more than 50% of its volume has lost its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately, even if no visible damage is seen on the shaft. The preventive review and replacement of the anode should be carried out at least once a season—or at each stranding—since keeping it in good condition is the most economical measure to avoid the costly replacement of a drive shaft or propeller damaged by galvanic corrosion.
