ANODE SHAFT 25 mm.
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft anodes are key elements of a boat's cathodic protection system: they are installed directly over the drive shaft to act as a sacrificial metal, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the shaft itself, propeller and sterndrive bearings. This 25 mm inner diameter anode (ref. CMC-25) is pressure mounted on the shaft, in direct contact with water, and is the first to degrade to preserve the more expensive metal components of the transmission line. In salty and brackish waters, where electrical conductivity accelerates electrolytic corrosion processes, the presence of an anode in good condition makes the difference between a season without incidents and the premature replacement of shafts or propellers.
When to replace this part?
Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, preferably at each beaching or annual hull inspection: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass or has a completely uneven and porous surface, it is time to replace it before it stops protecting the shaft. A shaft without effective cathodic protection may show signs of pitting, loss of section, or difficulty removing the propeller, symptoms that indicate active galvanic corrosion. Replacing the CMC-25 anode preventively each season is one of the lowest cost interventions that avoids high-cost repairs to the axle and transmission.
