Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be installed on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal that preferentially corrodes before higher value metal components. Its function within the underwater transmission system is to protect the shaft, propeller, spools and other submerged metal parts against galvanic corrosion, a particularly aggressive phenomenon in salt and brackish water environments. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can deteriorate the propulsion shaft in just a few seasons, generating looseness, vibrations and, in advanced cases, the need to replace high-cost components. The CMX-12 is sized for 2-3/4-inch shafts, ensuring a firm fit and effective electrical contact for long-lasting protection.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season; The general rule among naval mechanics professionals is to replace them when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. A completely consumed, very irregular or detached anode from the shaft is an unequivocal symptom that the shaft and propeller have been unprotected for some time, which can manifest itself in visible pits on the metal or in accelerated wear of the coils. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, regardless of the visual condition, is the practice recommended by nautical workshops to avoid serious breakdowns during navigation.
