ANODE SHAFT 2-1/2''
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is a sacrificial element that is part of the vessel's cathodic protection system, specifically designed to be installed around the tail shaft. Its mission is to act as a sacrificial electrode, corroding in a controlled manner to protect the propulsion shaft—usually made of stainless steel or bronze—against galvanic corrosion caused by the difference in electrical potential between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Without adequate cathodic protection on the shaft, corrosion can progressively degrade the metal of the shaft itself, sprockets, propellers and seals, compromising the structural integrity of the transmission system and causing costly breakdowns that are difficult to detect until the damage is severe.
When to replace this part?
The clearest indicator that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears visibly reduced, irregular or with deep pits, it has ceased to offer effective protection and the shaft is exposed to galvanic corrosion. The recommended maintenance guideline for shaft anodes is annual replacement, coinciding with seasonal stranding, regardless of the apparent condition, since an exhausted anode while sailing can result in serious damage to the shaft or propeller that multiplies the cost of repair. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to guarantee the useful life of the propulsion system.
