Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that attacks aluminum, steel and other alloys when they are in contact with salt or brackish water. Made from a highly reactive alloy, it acts as a sacrificial electrode: it corrodes itself before any structural part of the engine or boat does. In Selva engines, their correct installation and periodic replacement is decisive to preserve the integrity of the block, the propeller casing and other metal elements exposed to the marine environment. Without an anode in good condition, corrosion advances silently and can cause irreversible damage to components that require high replacement costs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume compared to the new state, it must be replaced immediately, since its protection capacity is compromised. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace it at least once a year in salt or brackish water environments, and more frequent changes may be required in areas of high conductivity. Replacing the anode preventively at each stranding is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs due to corrosion in the engine mount or transmission.
