ANODE JUNGLE MANTA/BARRACUDA
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield of any boat: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the most valuable metal parts of the outboard motor – propeller, shaft, transmission housing – against the electrochemical attack caused by salt and brackish water. This anode, compatible with Selva engines of the Manta and Barracuda series, is integrated into the lower part of the lower unit, acting as a preferential sacrificial element as it is anodic with respect to the aluminum and steel of the structural parts. Its function is to absorb galvanic corrosion before it reaches components that require expensive repair or are difficult to replace in the water.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it appears visibly reduced, irregular or with deep cracks, it has stopped offering effective protection and the aluminum of the engine begins to corrode. The condition of the anodes should be checked at least once a season—preferably before launching—and always after prolonged periods in areas of high salinity or with parasitic electrical currents in the pontoon. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of each season is the most cost-effective decision: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to repairing a corroded transmission housing.
