Function and technical context

The curved sacrificial anode for Selva engines acts as a cathodic protection element in the submerged part of the propulsion group, attracting electrolytic corrosion to itself and preserving the structural metal parts of the engine and the boat. This component works in the outboard anti-corrosion protection system, neutralizing the galvanic effect that occurs when different metals coexist in contact with water, especially in saline marine environments or waters with high mineral content. Its curved geometry facilitates precise adjustment over areas of the shell or blade where the concentration of galvanic currents is highest, guaranteeing effective protective coverage. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, corrosion begins to attack noble components such as the motor body, the shaft or the cavitator, generating costly structural damage that is difficult to repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume compared to the new state, it is advisable to replace it without waiting for it to disappear completely. The recommended inspection is at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and whenever the boat remains stranded in the water for prolonged periods, since the rate of wear depends directly on the conditions of the aquatic environment. Changing the anode preventively before it is completely exhausted is the most economical measure to avoid advanced corrosion in areas of the engine that can compromise navigation.
