Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode acts as a galvanic protector in the propulsion system and submerged structure of the outboard motor, deliberately oxidizing in place of the noble metal components of the motor. It works in the cathodic protection system, neutralizing the electrolytic corrosion produced by the potential difference between different metals in contact with water. Its presence is especially critical in engines operating in salt or brackish water, where galvanic corrosion can deteriorate the engine casing, propeller, shaft and other submerged metal elements in a matter of weeks. Without this component installed and in good condition, the metal parts of the Selva 6 hp engine suffer accelerated and irreversible degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the drive assembly.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator of exhaustion of an anode is the loss of visible mass: when the anode has consumed approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is no longer effective. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once per nautical season and replace it preventively at the beginning of each season or after a prolonged period of use in aggressive waters. Changing the anode during annual maintenance is a low-cost measure that prevents severe – and costly – damage to the lower casing, propeller shaft and aluminum components of the Selva engine.
