ANODO TIMON Ø 140mm (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The zinc rudder anode with a diameter of 140 mm is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be installed on the boat's rudder shaft, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. It works within the passive anti-corrosion protection system of the hull and submerged appendages, interacting with the salt or brackish water that permanently surrounds the metal surfaces of the rudder. Since zinc is a more active metal on the galvanic scale than stainless steel or bronze used in axles and hardware, the anode preferentially corrodes, preserving the structural integrity of the rudder and its accessories. If this component is depleted or not replaced in time, corrosion directly attacks the noble metal of the rudder, which can cause pitting, weakening of the shaft and, in serious cases, loss of control of the boat.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. The most obvious symptoms of a depleted anode are the appearance of reddish rust or visible pitting on the rudder shaft, discoloration of the adjacent metal surface, or an anode reduced to a residual metal core. As a professional rule, it is recommended to change the rudder anode at each annual beaching of the boat, without waiting for complete wear; A preventive replacement on the ground costs a fraction of the repair or complete replacement of a corroded rudder shaft.
