Description

Function and technical context

The disc-shaped sacrificial anodes act as cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion that affects the submerged metal parts of the boat. This zinc anode with circular geometry and 100 mm diameter is installed directly on shafts, propellers, keels or metal hulls to provide a sacrificial surface that corrodes preferentially before the structural components of the boat. Cathodic protection is especially critical in salt or brackish water areas, where the difference in electrical potential between dissimilar metals dramatically accelerates the electrolytic corrosion process. Without a healthy anode, bronze, aluminum or stainless steel components in the propulsion system or hull can suffer pitting and material loss that compromises the structural and functional integrity of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the disc anode has exhausted its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, it should be replaced without delay. As a general rule in nautical maintenance, zinc anodes are inspected at least once a season and replaced before wear becomes excessive, usually at the annual beaching. Replacing the anode preventively is the most cost-effective maintenance measure: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a propeller shaft, propeller or hull damaged by uncontrolled galvanic corrosion.
