Function and technical context

The zinc anodes for Max Prop propellers act as galvanic protection of the propeller shaft, preventing the electrolytic corrosion suffered by metals submerged in salt or brackish water. This component works within the propulsion system, sacrificing itself in a controlled manner to preserve the integrity of the 30 and 35 mm shaft, the variable pitch propeller and the adjacent metal elements. Its correct installation is critical on boats with Max Prop variable pitch propellers, since untreated galvanic corrosion can compromise the operation of the shaft, generate play in the cone and lead to costly repairs of the propulsion assembly.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator of exhaustion of an anode is the reduction of its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume it must be replaced without delay, before it stops offering effective protection. The inspection of the shaft anodes should be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water or with high eddy currents it may be necessary to inspect them every 6 months. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft and internal components of the Max Prop propeller.
