Description

Function and technical context

The Sleipner TEN01050 Propeller Anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to shield the propeller and adjacent metal components from galvanic corrosion. It acts as an electrochemical sacrifice: being a more active metal than the stainless steel or bronze of the propeller, it preferentially corrodes and preserves the structural integrity of the propelling parts. This component works in the propulsion system, directly exposed to sea or brackish water, where the difference in electrical potential between different metals causes accelerated material loss. Without adequate anodic protection, the propeller, shaft and hub can suffer from pitting, erosion and structural weakening that compromises both the propulsive performance and safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Propeller anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass or has an irregular and very porous surface, it is essential to replace it before it stops protecting effectively. Indicators that the anode is exhausted or has failed include pitting on the propeller, reddish or greenish discoloration on the hub, and visible material loss on the edges of the blades. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid the complete repair or replacement of a propeller damaged by galvanic corrosion.
