The NGK B9HS-10 spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that initiates combustion in the cylinder of the two-stroke outboard or marine engine. It is part of the ignition system and works in extreme conditions of temperature and pressure, acting as the ignition point that transforms the air-fuel mixture into mechanical energy. Its thermal grade 9 places it in the cold range, designed for engines that generate high temperatures in the combustion chamber, dissipating heat effectively towards the cylinder head to avoid self-ignition. A worn, contaminated or incorrectly spaced electrode causes misfires, noticeable loss of power, excessive fuel consumption and difficult starts, which can lead to damage to the coil or ignition module if not replaced in time.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a marine spark plug in poor condition are difficult starting or multiple attempts, rattling or "miss" at idle, loss of acceleration and increased fuel consumption; In advanced cases the engine may remain on "one cylinder less" or shut down completely under load. For two-stroke outboard engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of navigation, whichever comes first, always verifying that the electrode separation is as specified by the engine manufacturer - in this case 1.0 mm, indicated in the HS-10 reference. Changing the spark plug preventively at the beginning of each season is one of the lowest-cost interventions that provides greater reliability when tuning the engine before going sailing.
