Function and technical context

The Max Prop 39mm sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component specifically designed to attach to Max Prop variable pitch propellers, protecting them against galvanic corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals in seawater. Being a less noble metal than the bronze or stainless steel from which these propellers are made, the anode corrodes in a preferential and controlled manner, preserving the structural integrity of the propeller assembly. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly attack the propeller body, blades and internal variable pitch mechanisms, leading to costly breakdowns and loss of propulsive performance. The 39 mm diameter corresponds to the mounting specifications of specific models in the Max Prop range, guaranteeing a precise fit and effective electrical contact with the surface to be protected.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, generally during the annual beaching, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold they no longer offer effective protection. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode manifest themselves as pitting, surface erosion or abnormal discoloration on the body of the Max Prop propeller, as well as other metal components of the shaft and horn located in the area of ​​influence. It is recommended to preventively replace the anode at each grounding, especially in waters with high conductivity or in ports with strong galvanic current, to avoid irreparable damage to a high-value propulsion system such as the variable pitch propeller.
