Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack critical metal components such as the engine casing, tailshaft, propeller or transmission accessories. Made of high-purity zinc, it is designed to be installed in the power unit and consumed in a controlled manner before the electrochemical process affects the structural parts of the propellant. Its function is especially relevant in salt and brackish water environments, where the potential for galvanic corrosion is maximum and unprotected degradation can occur within a few sailing seasons. The Suzuki reference 55320-94900 covers a very wide range of DF series engines, from 60 hp units to 300 hp and higher, making it a widely used maintenance part in the Suzuki outboard fleet.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass due to electrochemical wear, appears cracked, chipped or has a very irregular surface. In areas of high salinity or with vessels moored in ports with high galvanic current, consumption can accelerate significantly and require mid-season inspection. The professional recommendation is to replace the zinc anode at each annual seasonal inspection, before it is completely exhausted, since an exhausted anode leaves the metal surfaces of the engine completely unprotected and exposed to accelerated corrosion that is difficult and expensive to repair.
