SUZUKI IMPELLER 17461-96400 CEF500399
Description
Function and technical context
The impeller is the heart of the outboard engine's water cooling system: its flexible rubber impeller, housed in the water pump, generates the flow necessary to maintain the engine temperature within safe operating ranges. Rotating inside the casing, the impeller vanes propel sea or river water from the lower intake to the engine block and cylinder head, dissipating the heat generated by combustion. A degraded or broken impeller causes a drastic drop in cooling flow, which can lead to severe overheating, damage to head gaskets and even complete impeller unusability if action is not taken in time.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn impeller are the absence or reduction of the cooling water jet through the nozzle indicator, the temperature light on the panel or abnormal heating of the engine during navigation. As a general rule, it is recommended to replace the water pump impeller every season or every 300-400 hours of operation, since the rubber vanes lose elasticity and efficiency over time even if the engine has not given any alarm signals. Renewing the impeller preventively at the beginning of the season is the most effective measure to avoid a cooling failure at sea.
