Description

Function and technical context

This aft anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the hull and the submerged metal elements of the boat. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, absorbing the electrochemical oxidation process that would otherwise attack propellers, shafts, rudders and other aluminum or stainless steel components in contact with salt or brackish water. With dimensions of 146x64 mm, it is designed to be installed in the stern area, where the concentration of exposed metal surfaces is greater and, therefore, the risk of galvanic corrosion is higher. The absence or depletion of this element can lead to severe and irreversible damage to structural and propulsion components, with repairs costing much higher than the anode itself.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the aft anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass due to sacrificial corrosion: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection. As a general rule, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season – usually at the annual beaching – and replace them whenever they show significant visible wear or cracks. Preventively replacing the anode before each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of shafts, propellers and other submerged metal parts, whose damage can multiply the maintenance cost several times.
