Description

Function and technical context

Hull anodes are the central element of the passive cathodic protection system of any vessel: their mission is to sacrifice themselves electrochemically to protect the submerged metal parts of the hull, propeller, shaft and other appendages against galvanic corrosion. The aluminum composition of this anode makes it especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where it offers optimal electrochemical potential and a more homogeneous protection current density than zinc anodes. By acting as the negative pole of the galvanic cell, the anode deteriorates in a controlled manner while the noble metallic structures of the hull—stainless steel, bronze, brass, structural aluminum—remain intact. The reference CMM24-A corresponds to dimensions of 111 x 51 mm, a standard format widely used for direct fixation on the flat hull using screws.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the hull anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: from that point on, the cathodic protection capacity decreases significantly and adjacent metal parts are exposed to corrosion. Visually, perforations, deep cracks or an obvious reduction in the volume of the anode can be seen; In advanced cases, oxidation marks or pitting may be detected on the hull or propeller shaft. The recommended maintenance guideline for hull anodes is inspection and replacement at each annual seasonal beaching, without waiting for complete wear, since a hull left unprotected for weeks can accumulate corrosion damage that is difficult and expensive to repair in the shipyard.
