Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key component of the cathodic protection system in boats: their function is to oxidize in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the outboard motor or propulsion system against galvanic corrosion caused by salt, brackish or fresh water. This anode with 93x33 mm support (reference CM-200Z) is designed to be installed directly on the structural support of the engine or propulsion unit, guaranteeing continuous electrical contact with the metal masses it protects. Without correct anodic protection, the zinc sacrificed would be the engine casing, shaft, propeller or internal transmission components, with the consequent risk of accelerated corrosion, pitting and irreversible structural loss in high-cost parts.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the anode has completed its cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, it must be replaced without delay, since its protective capacity is compromised. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season and, in areas of high marine aggressiveness or in boats that remain in the water for a long time, carry out inspections every six months. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is the most common practice among naval maintenance professionals to avoid corrosion damage to much higher cost parts.
