Description

Function and technical context

This 38 x 13 mm replacement zinc anode acts as a cathodic protection element on boats, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the submerged metal parts of the engine or transmission. It works within the anti-electrolysis system of the propulsion assembly, gradually sacrificing itself to protect more valuable components such as the tail shaft, the propeller shaft, the Z group casing or the heat exchangers. Its correct maintenance is essential: a depleted anode leaves the noble metals of the boat exposed to corrosion accelerated by electrolysis, which can lead to severe pitting, loss of structural material and costly breakdowns in components that are difficult to access.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be checked at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, appear cracked, are blackened or have reached a brittle consistency indicating depletion of the active material. As a general rule, an anode that has remained in salt or brackish water for an entire season should be replaced preventively, regardless of its visual appearance, since its protective capacity may be compromised even if it retains apparent volume. Replacing the spare zinc before the seasonal launch is the most economical measure to avoid electrolysis damage to critical parts of the propulsion system.
