Function and technical context

Zinc anodes are essential cathodic protection elements on any boat or outboard and outboard motor installed in marine, brackish or freshwater environments with exposed metal components. This 32 x 13 mm replacement zinc acts as a sacrificial anode: being a less noble metal than the aluminum or stainless steel of the engine or axle parts, it preferentially corrodes, absorbing the electrochemical attack and preserving the integrity of the structural components of the propulsion assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion silently attacks propellers, shafts, pump bodies and other metal parts, compromising the safety and performance of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the zinc anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when the zinc has lost approximately 50% of its volume, its protective capacity decreases dramatically and it must be replaced immediately. The inspection of the sacrificial anodes must be carried out at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat leaves the water for a beaching or careening; In areas with high electrical conductivity of water or with stray currents, the inspection frequency should be higher. Replacing zinc preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and prevents costly and irreparable damage to cast aluminum parts, shafts or propellers.
