Description

Function and technical context

The motor anode is a cathodic protection component made of zinc or sacrificial alloy that is installed directly on the block or housing of the outboard or inboard motor to shield it from galvanic corrosion. It acts as a sacrificial electrode: being a more electrochemically active metal than the aluminum or steel of the engine, it attracts the galvanic current and corrodes itself, preserving the structural parts of the propellant. Its function is especially critical in salt and brackish water environments, where the potential difference between different submerged metals accelerates degradation. Without this correctly sized anode – 128 x 19 mm in this case – galvanic attack can irreversibly deteriorate the engine casing, water caps or transmission components.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its volume, it has exhausted its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. If corrosion is observed on the metal surfaces of the engine—pitting, white or orange spots on the aluminum—it is a sign that the anode has worked to its limit or that it has not been checked for too long. Recommended professional practice is to inspect and replace the anode at least once per boating season, or each time the boat leaves the water for a beaching, to ensure continued protection and avoid costly structural repairs.
