Function and technical context

This zinc anode for outboard or inboard motor acts as active galvanic protection, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the metal parts of the engine in contact with salt or brackish water. With a diameter of 14.5 mm and a length of 36 mm, it is installed directly on the engine block or tail, forming part of the cathodic protection system of the powertrain. Without effective anodic protection, galvanic corrosion attacks critical structures such as the tail shaft, water pump housing or cylinder head, generating irreversible structural damage that compromises the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Engine anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, since below that threshold they no longer effectively protect the metal components of the engine. An unequivocal sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the appearance of pits or oxidation stains on nearby metal parts such as the exhaust manifold, the water pump or the cooling fittings. The preventive replacement of the anodes at each annual maintenance is the most cost-effective measure to avoid high-cost repairs due to corrosion in the lower parts of the engine.
