Description

Function and technical context

This plug with sacrificial anode is part of the water cooling circuit of G.M. marine engines, acting as a galvanic protection element in the ducts and water passage chambers of the engine block. Its function is twofold: on the one hand, it hermetically seals an access or purge hole in the cooling system; On the other hand, the built-in sacrificial zinc or alloy anode actively protects the internal metal surfaces against electrolytic corrosion caused by salt or brackish water. Without this protection, the cooling pipes, the block and the aluminum or cast iron components are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the tightness of the circuit and cause coolant leaks or engine overheating.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode is depleted is the presence of pitting or visible corrosion in the engine water passages, along with whitish or orange residue in the coolant. Anode plugs must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when the sacrificial material has lost more than 50% of its mass, or at least once a year in salty or brackish waters. Replacing this plug preventively is one of the most economical maintenance measures to avoid serious internal damage to the engine block, high-cost repairs or navigation breakdowns.
