Description

Function and technical context

The cooling anode plug is a cathodic protection element installed directly in the cooling circuit of the Aifo engine, whose mission is to electrochemically sacrifice itself to protect the internal passages, cylinder liner and water passages from galvanic corrosion. Being in continuous contact with cooling water – whether fresh or salty – it acts as a sacrificial anode, absorbing electrochemical degradation that would otherwise attack vital metal components of the engine block. Its progressive deterioration is completely normal and expected; The critical thing is to replace it before it is completely consumed, at which point the protection ceases and the noble metals of the engine are exposed to corrosion. A depleted anode in the cooling circuit can lead to pitting in the internal passages, partial blockages of coolant flow and, ultimately, engine overheating.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the cooling anode plug needs replacement is a visible reduction in its mass of more than 50%, noticeable when removed during the seasonal inspection; If it appears fragmented, grayish-white and porous, it has already exceeded its useful life. It is recommended to inspect and replace the cooling anodes at least once per nautical season or every 200-300 hours of operation in engines that navigate in brackish or marine waters, reducing this interval in areas of high salinity or with high galvanic currents at the mooring. Replacing this plug preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid irreparable internal damage to the Aifo engine block.
