Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the main cathodic protection mechanism in outboard motors and marine propellers: being a more electronegative metal than the aluminum or steel of the block, they corrode preferentially and prevent the structural components of the engine from suffering galvanic corrosion. This anode works within the cathodic protection system of the drive assembly, acting directly on metal surfaces submerged or in contact with salt, brackish or fresh water. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion attacks the block, the water pump housing, the fastening screws and other parts that are difficult and expensive to repair. The reference TEN01600 is made of zinc, aluminum or magnesium alloy depending on the application, and guarantees effective protection throughout the navigation season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign of replacement is visual: when the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass or has a very irregular and eroded surface, it must be replaced immediately. The practice recommended by nautical maintenance technicians is to check all anodes at the beginning and end of each season, replacing them preventively at least once a year or sooner if wear requires it. Sailing with a depleted anode can result in perforation of aluminum casings or the disabling of shafts and propellers, breakdowns that multiply the cost of a simple replacement part.
