Cathodic protection for Mercury Marine and Volvo Penta engines. The sacrificial anode preferentially oxidizes against the structural metals of the engine, preventing galvanic corrosion in propulsion and cooling systems exposed to salt or brackish water. Replace when it loses more than 50% of its mass.

Description

Function and technical context

This complete sacrificial anode acts as a cathodic protection element within the propulsion and cooling system of the marine engine, interposing an electrochemical barrier between the structural metals of the assembly and the aggressive aquatic environment. Being made of a metal with a higher negative electrochemical potential, the anode preferentially oxidizes, preserving intact the metal components of the propellant, the submerged exhaust system and the seawater cooling circuits. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can silently attack the engine body, propeller or exhaust manifolds, compromising the structural integrity of the assembly and leading to serious breakdowns that can render the boat inoperable.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass by more than 50% compared to the initial size, or the presence of a completely eroded, brittle or disintegrated surface. For boats sailing in salt or brackish water, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season and replace it preventively at each annual tune-up, regardless of its apparent condition. Renewing the anode before it is completely consumed prevents galvanic corrosion from starting to attack much higher cost parts, such as the shaft, propeller or engine block.
