Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key component of cathodic protection systems in marine engines and outboard propellers: they corrode in a controlled manner to preserve the structural metal parts of the engine against electrochemical attack by salt, brackish or fresh water. The TEN02052 anode works directly on the block or metal components of the Bukh engine, interposing a mass of less noble metal—usually zinc, aluminum or magnesium depending on the composition—that acts as a sacrificial electrode. Without active cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion attacks the casings, axles, propellers and exhaust manifolds, generating very high-cost structural damage that in many cases requires the replacement of complete assemblies.

When to replace this part?

The most reliable indicator of anode exhaustion is the loss of mass: when the electrode has reduced its volume by around 50% compared to the new state, it must be replaced before it disappears completely and leaves the metals of the motor unprotected. The recommended inspection is annual, coinciding with dry laying or seasonal maintenance, although in waters with high salinity or high eddy currents a semiannual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively each season is the most economical measure to avoid deep galvanic corrosion in cast iron or marine aluminum parts, the damage of which can result in repairs costing several thousand euros.
