Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for outboard or inboard motor with a 14 mm diameter and 20 mm long spike acts as active cathodic protection of the block and the submerged metal components of the propeller. Made of high-purity zinc, it installs directly onto the motor housing or shaft to capture galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the aluminum or steel of critical structural parts. Its function is to be sacrificed in a controlled manner, oxidizing before any other metal in the set, thus guaranteeing the integrity of the engine throughout the entire navigation season. Without adequate cathodic protection, electrolytic corrosion can penetrate the block, foot or propeller, causing irreversible damage that requires expensive repairs or even the replacement of entire components.

When to replace this part?

The wear of the anode can be seen visually: when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, it must be replaced immediately, since below that threshold it stops effectively protecting adjacent metals. It is recommended to inspect the sacrificial anodes at least once a season and always after a prolonged period of mooring in port, especially in waters with high conductivity or the presence of eddy currents. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical professional practice: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to that of repairing galvanic corrosion on the engine block or shaft.
