Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the electrochemical shield that protects the submerged metal parts of a water jet propulsion from galvanic corrosion. In a Hamilton Jet system, the Ø98 zinc anode is installed in the casing of the propulsion unit to act as a sacrificial electrode: being a more active metal than the aluminum or stainless steel of the pump, it corrodes first, thus preserving the structural integrity of the impeller, casing and shaft. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion silently attacks the most valuable parts, potentially rendering critical components of the jet unit unusable in just a few seasons, especially in salty or brackish waters where the conductivity of the water accelerates the process.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it has reached the limit of its useful life and no longer offers sufficient protection. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, before launching, or every time the boat is taken out of dry dock for maintenance. Delaying changing the anode is one of the most costly mistakes in sailing: a depleted anode leaves components of the Hamilton Jet unit unprotected, the repair or replacement of which can cost several thousand euros.
