Description

Function and technical context

The 68mm diameter aluminum Twin Disc-BCS propeller anode is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for propellers and drive shafts fitted with Twin Disc and BCS drive systems. Its mission is to galvanically sacrifice itself before the metal of the propeller or shaft does, thus protecting the most valuable metal parts against electrolytic corrosion produced by continuous immersion in salt, brackish or even fresh water with a high mineral content. The aluminum composition makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, offering a more uniform and controlled dissolution rate than zinc anodes, and it is also the correct choice when compatibility with boat cathodic protection systems is required. Without effective anodic protection in the propeller area, the hub, blades and shaft are exposed to accelerated corrosion, which can lead to imbalances, abnormal vibrations and, ultimately, structural failure of the propeller or thrust bearing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the propeller anode needs to be renewed is that it has consumed between 50% and 75% of its mass: at that point it can no longer guarantee complete protection for the rest of the season. Visually, a very irregular surface is observed, with deep craters, notable volume reduction or partial fragmentation; If the anode appears intact or with little wear when removing the boat, it may indicate a break in the ground circuit or a poor installation that prevents its correct operation. The professional guideline is to check all the boat's anodes at each docking - at least once a year - and replace them preventively at the beginning of each season, since the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to repairing or replacing a corroded propeller or a damaged shaft.
