Function and technical context

The propeller anode for Ferretti boats with a 155 mm diameter propeller acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack the noble metals of the propulsion: the propeller shaft, the hub and the propeller itself. Made of high-purity zinc, this anode is fixed directly on the propeller hub, creating a preferential galvanic circuit that concentrates oxidation on the anode itself and keeps the structural parts of the transmission intact. Its presence is especially critical in salty and brackish waters, where the potential difference between the different submerged metals generates high intensity eddy currents. Without this component, galvanic wear can compromise the integrity of the axle, hub and tail bearings in a matter of a single season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the propeller anode has exhausted its useful life is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed 50% to 60% of its initial volume, it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. As a general maintenance rule, zinc propeller anodes should be inspected when taking the boat ashore at the end of each season and replaced at the beginning of the next if they show significant wear; In areas with high marine conductivity or with the boat in permanent port connected to power, the semiannual review is essential. Renewing the anode preventively at each beaching avoids irreparable damage to the propeller and shaft that can result in costly repairs at the beach or emergency shutdowns.
