Description

Function and technical context

The Ø80 mm J-PROP propeller anode in aluminum alloy is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be mounted on the hub or core of the propeller, acting as a sacrificial electrode against galvanic corrosion. Being a less noble metal than the stainless steel or bronze of the propeller and shaft, the aluminum of the anode corrodes instead of the structural components of the transmission, preserving the integrity of the propeller and tailshaft. This type of anode is especially suitable for vessels that navigate in salty or brackish waters, where the electrochemical activity is more aggressive and the wear of unprotected metals is significantly accelerated. Insufficient cathodic protection or a depleted anode can lead to shaft pitting, propeller hub erosion and, in severe cases, costly transmission line failures that immobilize the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the propeller anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is no longer effective. The inspection of the anodes should be carried out at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, although in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water or with parasitic currents in the mooring it may be necessary to inspect them every two or three months. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of the season is the most economical and simple measure to avoid propeller or shaft repairs that can multiply the cost of this consumable several times.
