Description

Function and technical context

The teardrop anode with aluminum bolt is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a galvanic sacrifice to preserve the submerged metal surfaces of the hull, tailshaft, propeller and hardware. Its teardrop-shaped geometry allows secure fixation by bolt directly on the hull or on curved surfaces of the skate, optimizing the contact surface with the water and guaranteeing a progressive and uniform dissolution. Cathodic protection is critical in marine environments: without an anode in proper condition, electrolytic corrosion attacks the noble metal parts of the boat—rudders, propellers, shafts and horns—causing costly and irreparable structural damage. The aluminum alloy used in this anode makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where it offers superior electrochemical potential to zinc in terms of protection efficiency.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that an anode has completed its life cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume compared to its new state, it must be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. The standard recommendation in nautical maintenance is to check all anodes at each docking, at least once a season, and replace them if they show excessive wear, cracks or a completely passivated surface (coated with hard white oxide that prevents dissolution). Do not wait until the next season if incipient corrosion is detected on shafts or propellers: a new anode is considerably cheaper than repairing or replacing the parts it protects.
