Function and technical context

The aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial element in the cooling circuit of the marine engine, first protecting itself against the galvanic corrosion suffered by the internal metal components. This type of anode is integrated into the passages of the engine's fresh water system, where it is oxidized in a controlled manner before corrosion can affect the engine block, cylinder head, cooling pipes or auxiliary systems. Its function is critical in saline environments or waters with a high mineral load, where the electrochemical action is especially aggressive. Without active anodic protection, the internal cooling circuit suffers structural deterioration that compromises the integrity of the seals, causes internal leaks and accelerates propellant overheating.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode should be inspected regularly at the end of each boating season, noting whether it has significant material loss, accelerated erosion, or whether more than 30-50 percent of its mass has disappeared. Preventive replacement before starting a new navigation campaign is the most prudent technical recommendation, since a depleted anode leaves the internal cooling system unprotected, exposing the engine to structural corrosion that can result in leaks, overheating and high-cost repairs.
