Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is a sacrificial component that protects the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion in salt water. Installed in the engine's cathodic protection system, it acts as an electrochemical barrier, preferably oxidizing before the engine block, crankshaft or iron and steel components. Its controlled degradation prevents the formation of red oxide and the loss of structural integrity in the most critical areas of the propulsion equipment, guaranteeing the durability of the marine investment even during continuous navigation in a saline environment.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or exhibits accelerated erosion. Visible corrosion in the form of whitish deposits on the metal of the motor, red rust stains around the metal anchors or greater fragility in the submerged areas of the equipment are clear symptoms that the anode has exhausted its protective capacity. A preventative replacement in spring maintenance prevents costly structural damage and significantly extends engine life.
