Function and technical context

The aluminum sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component that acts within the cooling system and hull of the marine engine. Its fundamental mission is to rust in a controlled manner instead of the aluminum and steel of the engine block and internal components, avoiding galvanic corrosion caused by salt or brackish water. Without this part, the noble metals of the engine would experience accelerated deterioration, with the risk of perforation, coolant leaks, and water entering the cooling circuit. It is especially critical in Yamaha engines for marine applications, where continuous exposure to aqueous electrolytes accelerates metallic degradation.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, or when pitting and visible erosion occurs. In salty water or water with high mineral content, wear is faster and may require annual change; in fresh waters, the duration is longer. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical way to protect the engine, avoiding costly repairs due to internal corrosion that result in unscheduled stops in navigation.
