Description

Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively degrades aluminum and other metals in contact with saltwater or brackish water. This component acts as a consumable element within the motor's cathodic protection system: by preferentially oxidizing, it preserves the structural parts of the block, gearcase, and lower unit. Without a properly functioning anode, galvanic corrosion can severely compromise vital outboard components such as the propeller, transom shaft, or lower casing, resulting in very costly repairs.

When to Replace This Part?

Anode wear is visible to the naked eye: when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, it must be replaced without delay. In saltwater environments or areas with high electrical conductivity (harbors with stray currents), consumption can be much faster. Recommended practice is to inspect the anode condition at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace it preventively at least once per year; delaying its replacement can leave the motor without active cathodic protection and lead to irreversible damage in hard-to-access areas.
