This plate anode acts as cathodic protection on the gear case housing of Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors, drawing galvanic corrosion toward itself that would otherwise degrade the structural metal parts of the transmission. It operates within the corrosion protection system of the submerged portion of the motor, absorbing the electrochemical oxidation generated by contact between dissimilar metals and saltwater or brackish water. When to Replace This Part?

Standard practice on marine vessels is to inspect and replace anodes at the beginning of each season or whenever the motor has been in the water for more than six months; in high salinity zones or aggressive waters, the interval can be considerably shortened.
