Function and Technical Context

This aluminum sacrificial anode is part of the cathodic protection system for OMC outboard and outboard motors, acting as a sacrificial electrode that preferentially corrodes compared to the metallic parts of the motor in contact with water. By oxidizing in a controlled manner, it protects critical components such as the trim shaft, motor housing and propellers against galvanic corrosion, especially in saltwater or brackish water environments. Without a sacrificial anode in correct operating condition, electrochemical corrosion advances over the structural parts of the propulsion unit, causing severe damage that can compromise motor integrity and result in costly repairs. The aluminum material makes it especially suitable for use in saltwater environments, offering effective and durable protection against marine corrosion.

When to Replace This Part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the start of each boating season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, show a completely irregular surface, or exhibit excessive corrosion indicating advanced wear. On vessels that frequently navigate in saltwater or brackish environments, it is recommended to check the anode condition every 6 months or at least once per season, as its degradation may be faster. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid serious corrosion damage to the propulsion system.
