Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum sacrificial anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as an active electrode that corrodes in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine - casing, shaft, body of the drive shaft - against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt, brackish or water with a high mineral content. As aluminum is a material with a greater negative electrochemical potential than steel or brass, the anode sacrifices itself by absorbing the electrolytic attack, thus preserving the structural integrity of the more expensive internal components. A depleted or missing anode can lead to accelerated and irreversible corrosion of the engine cover, shaft support or gearbox, with the serious mechanical and economic consequences that this entails.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is the loss of between 50% and 75% of its mass: when it appears clearly reduced, deformed or disintegrated, it must be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each nautical season, as well as at each stranding, and replace it preventively at least once a year in salt water or with high frequency of use. Waiting for the anode to be completely consumed leaves the motor unprotected and can cause corrosion damage to parts that are only detected when the failure is already costly and irreversible.
