Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, attracting galvanic corrosion to itself to preserve the structural metal parts of the propeller. It works in the most aggressive environment of the boat: the submerged area of ​​the engine, continuously exposed to salt or brackish water where electrochemical processes quickly degrade noble metals such as aluminum. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the casing, foot and propeller of the motor, potentially causing irreversible structural damage and very costly repairs. Zinc is the ideal material for marine and brackish waters, offering effective protection in the most demanding navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The clearest alarm signal is the reduction of the anode to less than half its volume: when the zinc is worn by more than 50%, its protective capacity drops drastically and it must be changed immediately. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replace them annually as a preventive rule in areas of high salinity or with electrical installations on board that favor parasitic currents. Changing the anode on time is the most economical maintenance intervention that exists: its cost is minimal compared to repairing a corroded engine foot.
