Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as a sacrificial electrode to protect the metal parts of the propulsion group against galvanic corrosion produced by contact with salt or brackish water. As a more active metal than aluminum or stainless steel in engine structural parts, zinc preferentially corrodes, preserving the integrity of the block, casing and other critical metal components. A depleted or missing anode leaves the engine exposed to accelerated corrosion that can seriously compromise the useful life of the propellant and lead to structural failures that require costly repair.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode is exhausted is the presence of visible corrosion on the metal surfaces of the motor, pitting in the lower casing or the anode reduced to less than half of its initial volume. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at the beginning of each season and replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is the most economical measure to avoid damage due to galvanic corrosion that can render high-cost components unusable.
