Description

Function and technical context

The NGK B7HS-10 spark plug is part of the ignition system of the marine petrol engine, being the element responsible for generating the electric spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber in each work cycle. With a separation between electrodes of 1.0 mm, this component is specifically designed to offer stable and repeatable ignition under the conditions of the nautical environment: constant humidity, atmospheres loaded with salt and sudden temperature changes that accelerate electrode wear. Its correct operation is decisive for the efficiency of the engine, since a weak or irregular spark causes incomplete combustion, which translates into loss of power, increased fuel consumption and accumulation of carbon deposits in the chamber. In small and medium displacement two-stroke engines, where the ignition cycle occurs twice as many times per revolution compared to a four-stroke, the spark plug works under especially high thermal and electrical demands.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of a damaged spark plug in outboard engines are: difficulty or inability to start when cold, jerks and ignition cuts at cruising speed, unstable idle and a perceptible increase in petrol consumption; When removing the spark plug, the electrode may show visible erosion, black soot deposits or, in cases of poor mixture, a whitish discoloration. For outboard engines in regular use, it is recommended to inspect the spark plug every 100 hours of operation and replace it at the beginning of each boating season as a preventive measure. Changing this part on a scheduled basis is one of the most economical maintenance interventions available and prevents a misfire from leaving the boat inoperative at sea.
